There are moments in which distant worlds come together harmoniously to create unexpected beauty. This is the case of the Wellcome Image Awards, which for 20 years have celebrated the best science images, evaluating them on the basis of their beauty but also their ability to communicate complex scientific issues to the public.
The subjects depicted in the works at the Wellcome Image Awards capture the magic of science in all its forms and dimensions. For example, it isn’t uncommon to go from a photo of a microscopic molecule activating a neurone to a 3D rendering of a global atmospheric event. Unique and elusive appearances with vantage points located between the visible and the invisible that could easily be mistaken for conceptual works of art.
Like every year a far from easy task awaits the mixed jury made up of both medical science experts and scientific communicators. To admire the selection and see all of the 22 finalist photos, click here.
