It’s the new Silicon Valley for hardware startups. Chicago is the largest city in the state of Illinois, one of the top five places for high-tech jobs in the United States. In addition, Chicago is a symbol of innovation in urban planning: City Digital, which was founded here, is a project intended to resolve issues linked to the transfer and transport of energy.
– Toronto, Canada
This is the Canadian capital for tech businesses and startups. Toronto is home to 30% of Canada’s IT companies. Overall, the city’s companies account for roughly 52 billion dollars in revenues every year. Home consumption monitoring systems, energy production from gas generated by waste, 3D printing within anyone’s reach: these are just some of the ingredients that make Canada’s financial capital one of the most innovative cities in the world.
– Singapore
Singapore boasts of an extremely high number of programmers and venture capitalists. For years now the State has been building dozens of examples of high-tech infrastructure and skyscrapers. It partnered with MIT to construct a smarter transport system. Singapore is aiming to respond to global challenges such as urban residential density, the ageing population, health care, mobility and energy sustainability. To do this, it has decided to invest in innovation and has opened up to the startup ecosystem. The government has already made a portal that gathers data about the city available to everyone, on the basis of which 100 apps have already been developed which aim to improve the life of the city’s population.
– Boston, USA
Boston is the home of MIT, and this already speaks volumes. A number of exciting new technologies were created in this city which, aside from the world-renowned institution, also hosts the Harvard, Tufts and Northeastern research centres and laboratories. The R&D offices of tech giants Facebook and Amazon are also located here.
– Seoul, South Korea
Seoul has been called the city of the future: innovation is an integral part of its design, and it has more patents than any other city in the world. It has also developed globally successful technologies, such as the LTE standard used on our smartphones.
– Taipei, Taiwan
Taipei is a global leader in industrial design. Some of the largest computer companies, such as Asus and Acer, are headquartered here. This smart city also scores top marks in terms of its number of venture capitalists.
– Los Angeles, USA
California is where Silicon Valley is located. In this area, Los Angeles is second only to San Francisco. In 2014, an LA County Economic Development Corporation study showed that LA had more high-tech jobs than any other region of the United States. In addition, startups and venture capital are playing a significant role in the LA tech sector boom.
– New York, USA
The city is home to a thriving tech sector with 300,000 employees – on par with Silicon Valley. Its environmental initiative – PlaNYC – contains hundreds of objectives about everything, from the number of breakwaters created by oyster reefs to the cubic metres of natural gas captured from sewage systems.
– San Francisco, USA
Amongst other things, San Francisco is the capital of Silicon Valley. So it is no coincidence that it is one of the most innovative cities in the world. It is the undeniable epicentre of every technology, from its huge startup culture to the venture capital scene and its population of designers and programmers.
